Species spotting

Surprise rainbow for the early morning bird survey in May

We’re fortunate to have a number of experienced ecologists, botanists and wildlife-identifiers amongst our volunteer numbers, many of whom spend regular time in Wild Maple Field observing the flora, fauna and bird life.

Thanks to their dedication, we are building a good evidence-based picture of the biodiversity of the Field, which will be invaluable to informing the management plan in future years. Even for the passer-by, it’s easy to notice the abundance of vole holes, insect life and song birds. It will be interesting to note how populations fare under the challenging seasonal conditions: the wet winter of 2024-5 has been followed by exceptionally dry spring months. Check back here for reports from time to time…

These photo collages were created of species seen during a wildflower survey in Apr2025 - and also young caterpillars on the bird cherry tree.
