Wild Maple Field

Impossible dreams can come true

Precious space for nature to thrive, bringing together wildlife and local communities.

Our vision is to develop a nature reserve by converting this field of grazed grassland into a range of different habitats that over time will increase biodiversity and encourage wildlife. A space that, although for wildlife first, can be enjoyed by everyone.

TWO YEARS ON… (Mar 2025)
In 2023, after a hugely successful CrowdFunder, we were able to purchase 10.74 acres of sheep-grazed grassland on the edge of Wirksworth.

With the support of more than 100 volunteers, the field now boasts hundreds of tree saplings, a new hedge and a reclaimed dew pond.

Already we are delighted to observe an increased range of species, and continue to learn new skills, forge new friendships and partnerships, too.

Changing our world is possible, just one step at a time

What started as a crazy idea in 2023 is now a reality. Having secured the field off Summer Lane, we have consulted and worked with a range of wildlife experts to determine how best to approach this project.

“I didn’t think you stood a snowball’s chance in hell, but you have proved me and many others wrong. Well done and congratulations! The people of Wirksworth do their miracles once again.”
